About Me
I strive to work collaboratively with each client to determine the best approach given the person’s individualized needs. My treatment approach is eclectic and draws from person-centered therapy, cognitive-behavioural therapy, solution-focused therapy, emotion-focused therapy, motivational interviewing, positive psychology, and training in mindfulness and relaxation techniques. Often the initial focus is more on the ‘here and now’ to help relieve distress or reach specific goals, followed by a process to address any lifelong patterns and/or underlying issues that might make recurrence a possibility.
Productive psychotherapy occurs within the context of a positive therapeutic relationship between the therapist and client, so often times the first one or two sessions are focused on a consultation to review the client’s concerns and for us to see if we are a good fit to work together. During this time, I will make recommendations for a treatment plan and will ask for the client’s feedback. If it is determined that a client’s specific needs may be better serviced elsewhere, alternative referrals will be provided.
Psychotherapy should do more than simply alleviate your symptoms; it should build your emotional intelligence and resilience. Every crisis and/or challenge is an opportunity to learn something about yourself and to continue to develop healthier coping skills to help prevent and manage relapses.
