New Mental Health Crisis Clinic in London, Ontario

Zahra Abdi
Mental health is that balance you establish within yourself, given your own psychological well-being and other external factors that may impact you, such as your social and economic milieu. Mental health has been receiving much more public attention recently as there is a greater number of Canadians experiencing mental health related problems. Anyone can be affected.

stress An imbalanced mental state affects your outlook on life, how you build and maintain relationships, your ability to effectively communicate with people and how you deal with emotions and issues. Mental well-being is about being able to love yourself and be happy, as such mental health centres are important part of any community.

This was perhaps what the CMHA had in mind when Search Community Health Service, CMHA London-Middlesex and WOTCH Community Mental Health Services united under one name, as The Canadian Mental Health Association Middlesex (CMHA). In doing so they were able to meet the needs of the vast community in western Ontario. This grand change happened not so long ago in 2014, but now they’re back at it again expanding and refining their services by building a new Mental Health Crisis Clinic in London.

The new crisis clinic will be able to provide a 3 day long hospital-like lodging for people at risk of inflicting harm onto themselves and others, addicts, those facing trauma, people in crisis and so on; in general it’s a great place that looks into helping you deal with your mental health issues.

What’s not to be excited about?

The CMHA Middlesex in London see’s up to 4000 people each year and this clinic is projected to have about 2100 people a year. That’s a big step.

One of the challenges facing population of people living in less populated areas, is a lack of mental health facilities, and mental health awareness. This was probably one factor that led to 17 year old Thomas, from a rural part of Canada into taking his life. This isn’t to say that the CMHA regions are completely rural, in the statistical list of cities within classified as either fully, partially or non-metro, Middlesex was under the partially metro in 2011. Well that’s besides the point.

mental health The CMHA’s new facility will be able to address mental wellness needs more efficiently. It will accommodate more people like Irene struggling with the difficulty of homelessness, or people like M suffering from anxiety attacks, and suicidal thoughts. According to both M and Irene, the CMHA provided a stress free environment and friendly service!

The CMHA staff will be able to provide counselling, and provide whatever support they can. At the very least they will be able to refer you to whatever may be beneficial to you. If you’re in distress and living near these regions, just know you’ve got supportive people who got you back covered, or mind I should say.
